Why This Programme

Our Mission

The AURA Foundation's Prisoner Assistance programme is committed to upholding the dignity and rights of every incarcerated individual in Burundi — from pre-trial detainees to convicted persons — by providing legal aid, humanitarian support, and pathways to reintegration.

We firmly believe that each human being, regardless of their past mistakes, deserves to be treated with dignity and to benefit from support to build a better future. Our programme reaches prisons across several provinces of Burundi.

What We Aim For

Our Objectives

1
Guarantee Access to Legal Aid

Ensure every detainee — regardless of financial means — has access to legal representation and understands their rights under Burundian law.

2
Improve Detention Conditions

Advocate for and directly contribute to better living conditions inside prisons — including access to food, healthcare, hygiene products, and mental health support.

3
Maintain Family Connections

Facilitate regular family visits and communication to preserve vital social bonds that are critical for rehabilitation and mental wellbeing.

4
Provide Vocational Training

Equip incarcerated individuals with practical skills — carpentry, tailoring, digital literacy, farming — so they can rebuild their lives with dignity upon release.

5
Support Successful Reintegration

Accompany released persons through the transition back into society with job placement support, housing guidance, and ongoing psychosocial follow-up.

6
Advocate for Prison Reform

Engage with authorities and policymakers to promote a justice system grounded in rehabilitation, human dignity, and restorative practices.
